A lifelong trained cellist and a 17 year teacher, Jenny Downs is currently teaching cello in the southwest area of Salt Lake County, Utah. She has experience teaching preschool-adult students, beginners, and transfer students as well. She stays active in performing as time allows. Before moving to Utah she was a member of the Mid-Columbia Symphony in Richland, WA. She currently plays with the Kensington Orchestra and Kensington quartet as well as the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra in South Jordan, UT. She has done many years of freelance performing, including weddings, studio recordings, charity events, concerts with performing artists such as the Bar J Wranglers and Kurt Bestor. Her main devotion lies in teaching. She has been a teacher in the Suzuki method of music for the past 5 years. She has trained under Carey Cheney of Salt Lake and Pam Davenport of the School of Music in New York. She currently has Students ranging from Pre-Twinkle to Book 8.
She is certified in Suzuki Pre-Twinkle to Book 7.
Jenny received her Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in early childhood music education from Brigham Young University. While there, she studied under the world-renowned Roger Drinkall. She also received training in the Kodaly music philosophy and integrates its concepts as well.
Along with her teaching and playing, she runs her household of 5 children with her husband. Her teaching schedule is set up around her family, as they are her first priority. She travels to the majority of her students’ homes for lessons.
